Marcellus Pittman

Pittman, like many of his Detroit contemporaries, keeps an intriguingly low profile. He is best known for his involvement in the 3 Chairs collective alongside Kenny Dixon Jr., Rick Wilhite, and Southport favourite, Theo Parrish. ‘Spectrum’, the latest release from the group, compiles some of their rarest moments alongside brand new material that continues to champion the soul-drenched analogue production aesthetic.

Pittman is also the keyboard player for The Rotating Assembly, another collective of Detroit musicians that features Genevieve Marentette on vocals, Trent Mitchell on bass, Andrés on percussion and the great John Douglas on trumpet.

In 2006, Theo Parrish was so impressed with Pittman’s productions that he created the Sound Signature offshoot label ‘Unirhythm’ to showcase his talent. The pinnacle of Unirhythm’s output is the unforgettable ‘There’s Somebody Out There’ with its constant shuffling beat and a paranoid acid synth that twists and turns throughout: edgy, incessant and devastatingly effective.

Be sure to check out this rare appearance from a Detroit luminary whose lo-fi late night selections promise to tear down the walls in the Beat Bar this weekend.
